SUMO DIDI
Sumo Didi is a narrative feature film inspired by the life of India’s first female sumo wrestler Hetal Dave. It officially competed in the Asian Future section of the 36th Tokyo International Film Festival 2023, the competition section of the New York Indian Film Festival 2024 and in the World Cinema Now section of 35th Palm Springs International Film Festival 2024 where it was also selected in the Best of Fest films.
Set in Kolkata and Japan, Sumo Didi is a story of grit and rising from the depths of despair. A middle class girl from a conservative marwari household defies all odds to turn her perceived weakness into strength and breaks the glass ceiling.
Directed by Jayant Rohatgi, screenplay by Nikhil Sachan, cinematography by Akash Agrawal, edited by Devrao Jhadhav, background score by Amar Mangrulkar and produced by Jio Studios, Freshlime Films and MA+TH Entertainment, the film stars Shriyam Bhagnani, Chaitnya Sharma, Anubha Fatehpuria, Nitesh Pandey, Raghav Dhir, Meenal Kapoor, Sucheeta Trivedi and Kazumasa Satou.
